CHURCH ORGAN
The Historic Organ at St. Mary the Virgin
St. Mary the Virgin houses one of the county’s largest and most historic organs. Built in 1726 by Christopher Shrider, it was originally installed at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, where it was presented by King George I and played by Handel at its dedication. In 1800, the organ was purchased by the vicar of Wotton-under-Edge and installed at St. Mary’s.
With three manuals, a pedalboard, and a wide range of stops—including trumpets, diapasons, a cornopean, and a flute—the organ produces a rich, powerful sound that enhances both services and performances. Its full specification is available on the National Pipe Organ Register. Today, it remains a treasured feature of the church and its musical heritage.
